Tips for managing arthritis pain and inflammation in elderly

Medication: Consult with a healthcare professional to determine if medication is necessary to manage arthritis pain. Non steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), such as ibuprofen or naproxen, are commonly used to reduce inflammation and relieve pain. However, it is important to follow the recommended dosage and be aware of potential side effects.

Physical therapy: Engaging in physical therapy can help improve joint flexibility, reduce pain, and increase overall strength. A physical therapist can design a personalized exercise program tailored to an individual’s specific needs and abilities.

Hot and cold therapy: Applying heat or cold to the affected joints can help alleviate pain and reduce inflammation. Heat therapy, such as using a heating pad or warm towel, can help relax muscles and increase blood flow. Cold therapy, such as using an ice pack or cold compress, can numb the area and reduce swelling.

Assistive devices: Using assistive devices, such as canes, walkers, or braces, can help reduce stress on the joints and provide support during daily activities. These devices can help improve mobility and decrease pain.

Weight management: Maintaining a healthy weight is important for managing arthritis pain, as excess weight can put additional stress on the joints. A balanced diet and regular exercise can help achieve and maintain a healthy weight.

Joint protection: Avoiding activities that put excessive strain on the joints can help prevent further damage and reduce pain. Using proper body mechanics, such as lifting with the legs instead of the back, can also help protect the joints.

Stress management: Chronic pain can be emotionally and mentally draining. Engaging in stress-reducing activities, such as meditation, deep breathing exercises, or pursuing hobbies, can help improve overall well-being and reduce the perception of pain.
